The University of Minnesota Morris, also known as simply UMM, is a public liberal arts college and a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges located in Morris, which is a town in Stevens County, in the US state of Minnesota, with a population of little over 5000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.
UMM was established in 1960, but it traces its roots back in the 1880s, when an American Indian boarding school was formed on the site and run by the Roman Catholic Church and later the US government, which was closed in 1909 and the campus was transferred to the State of Minnesota under the agreement that American Indians would always be admitted free of tuition (which is still followed, today).
The university currently offers its students 35 majors and minors and eight pre-professional programs in education, the humanities, science and mathematics and social sciences, 5 of the most popular majors on campus being English language and literature, business administration and management, psychology, human services and political science and government.
UMM's athletic teams are known as the Cougars and they compete in NCAA Division III's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gold.
Among UMM's famous graduates, there are also: Tim Goodmanson - Emmy winning art director for `As the World Turns`, Tony Williamson - founder, Ajasa Technologies, selected as the 2009 Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) Charles W. Poe Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Bruce Helmerowner - Wealth Enhancement Group, WCCO radio personality, and Bruce Johnson - president and CEO, Porchlight Entertainment.
